«That nothing may be lost»: The Theme of «Gathering into One»
in Eucharistic Praying from the Didache to Ps.-Dionysius

Abstract
This essay retrieves a neglected theme near the heart of a distinct lineage of early Eucharistic prayers, preserved in the culminating petitions of a number of Syro-Byzantine anaphoras: the prayer for «gathering into one». Part 1 traces the history of this theme from its first appearance in the Didache and (so-called) Apostolic Tradition through its development in several anaphoral descendants. Part 2 locates this theme’s consummate expression in Ps.-Dionysius’s commentary on the Eucharistic rite in his Ecclesiastical Hierarchy, which not only bears witness to an anaphora in thematic continuity with the family of prayers drawn out in Part 1, but also suggests that the prayer for «gathering into one» may have once been understood as the heart of the whole rite.

Questo studio riporta alla mente un tema obliato all’interno di un gruppo ben distinto di antiche preghiere eucaristiche, conservato nelle invocazioni di un certo numero di anafore siro-bizantine, la preghiera per “riuniti insieme”. La prima parte ripercorre la storia del tema dalle prime attestazioni presenti nella Didachè e nella (cosiddetta) Traditio apostolica fino al suo sviluppo in anafore successive.
La seconda parte individua la completa espressione di questo tema nel commentario sul rito eucaristico Gerarchia ecclesiatica dello Pseudo-Dionigi, non solo garantisce una testimonianza ad una anafora nella continuità tematica con la famiglia delle preghiere indicate nella prima parte, ma suggerisce che la preghiera “riuniti insieme” poteva essere stata considerata come il fulcro dell’intero rito.
